How Mark Dobbins Makes Guitars "Video of the Day" review by Alex Cosper on March 1, 2013

In this second in a series of interviews with Mark Dobbins, the guitar maker explains how he handcrafts guitars with machines that he built himself. The video shows how he molds and heats wood around patterns that he has creates. The wood is heated and bent around a "bender." Wood can also be treated with softeners. He talks about the different types of wood that makes great guitars, such as maple, spruce, cedar, mahogany and redwood. Due to wood shortages, there are many alternatives from places like West Africa. Certain wood, such as Brazilian rosewood has become an endangered species and isn't used much anymore. He avoids cheap wood that easily cracks apart. Mark also talks about the rising popularity of ukeleles. He says "it's easier to learn than guitar, it's easier on your fingers, it's smaller to travel with, in general it's less expensive."
