Reflecting on KWOD in the 90s "Video of the Day" review by Alex Cosper on January 22, 2013

KWOD 106.5 was a fun independent alternative radio station in the 90s, dominating the Sacramento rock scene. Mike Lidskin on Twirl Radio asked me questions about programming KWOD in its heyday as an alternative station. I explained to Mike that one of my best memories was helping elevate Cake to a national level.

Back in the 90s, before corporate consolidation completely changed the sound of radio by abandoning local culture and focusing on national music and advertising, it was possible for a local artists to gain attention nationally if their songs performed well locally. These days the music and radio industries operate far away from that process as the trend has consistently moved toward tighter national playlists.

In this final segment of our interview series we discuss how radio has changed since the 90s when commercial radio jocks had much more freedom to express themselves than they do now.
