KROY Story #1 with Johnny Hyde: Early Rock and Roll
SacTV.com "Video of the Day" review by

KROY AM was Sacramento's top radio station in the 60s and 70s under the programming leadership of Johnny Hyde and
a series of other successful programmers. They were hired by Dwight Case, who left the station in the mid-seventies,
when the station began to face more competition. Case went on to be head of RKO, which owned powerhouse stations
KHJ in Los Angeles and KFRC in San Francisco. The reason Case hired Hyde from competitor KXOA in the late sixties was
that Johnny's show was beating everyone in town. In this eight-part video interview series Johnny shares the reasons
what made 1240 KROY great. This first episode focuses on Hyde's childhood dream of being on the radio, listening to
early rock and roll stations in the Midwest. He grew up in St. Louis then got his start in Tucson before moving to
California. Check out the entire KROY Story video series.
