Railyards History and Revitalization "Video of the Day" review by Alex Cosper on Feb. 21, 2012

The Sacramento Railyards at one time was the site of the valley's top employer for eight decades. It was a western hub of the Transcontinental Railroad. It is now the talk of a Downtown revitalization plan for a new sports complex and museum that showcases the science and engineering of rail technology. It's also the site for a high-speed rail plan. The area sits next to the fork of the Sacramento and American Rivers and could ultimately become a vital part of a new waterfront development, creating a tourist attraction. This brief documentary summarizes the history and importance of the site that could also become a district of new stores and homes.

Mayor Kevin Johnson calls the Railyards a smart growth project that could double the size of Downtown. The effort has been helped by non-profit organization Center For Creative Land Recycling (CCLR), which has been a redevelopment advocate both on a local and federal level, helping the City secure funding for the project. The project is seen by local leaders as a way to boost the region's economy as a solution to the lenghty recession. Read more about the project in this Sacramento Press article.
