Mayor Kevin Johnson explains plans for moving forward with Sacramento's Downtown revitalization in this speech
from January 18, 2012. He says that revitalization efforts were dealt two blows the past year. He says the first blow was
the governor's approval of state legislation for "raiding the redevelopment coffeurs" to balamce the state budget. The other blow for the community,
Johnson says, was the U.S. Supreme ruling that revitalization agencies must cease operations in February.
Nevertheless, Johnson says, the City will find a way to move forward with economic development, affordable housing and
job creation. The Mayor says the three most important Downtown issues are redevelopment, improving the Downtown Plaza and the proposed
entertainment/sports complex, which he calls a "game-changer." The complex will have a $7 million impact
on the community and will create 4,000 jobs, he assures. He encourages Downtown businesses to keep fighting through tough times
and to embrace new development. Read more about Mayor Johnson's sports complex plan in this
Sacramento Press article.
