National Anthem Sax Solo by Ava Lemert
SacTV.com "Video of the Day" review by
Alex Cosper on Feb. 4, 2012
Ava Lemert plays a solo of "The Star Spangled Banner" on tenor sax at Arco Arena in this video. She had
the honor of playing the National Anthem before a game between the Kings and the New Orleans Hornets
on Nov. 29, 2009. Her performance is legendary and the rendition is true to the original melody. While it's typical for
the song to be performed with a contemporary feel, her version combines eras and genres. Jazz, although
often overlooked by the mainstream, has been a core foundation of American culture for the past century
and in this performance she delivers a modern sound to a traditional style.
The challenge of the song is in its wide dynamics. Ava has a way of shifting from a relaxed to vibrant sound
effortlessly. She is a seasoned musician who also makes eclectic soulful vocal recordings. On her website
AvaLemert.com she explains she is a mother, graphic
designer and elementary school teacher. She likes to write a wide range of music that includes soul, bossa nova,
surf rock, heavy metal, blues and instrumentals.
Ava sang the National Anthem on KCRA Channel 3 at Cal Expo during the 2000 State Fair. She has also performed
on "Good Day Sacramento" and has been performing live regularly since 2008. Her first CD From My Soul was
released in 2009, which she followed with a series of singles. Her CD "12welve" is scheduled for release on April 3, 2012.
