Tesla's rise in the local scene started with the cover band City Kid, which played regularly at the Oasis Ballroom in Downtown Sacramento. In 1986 they were signed to Geffen Records. Members include Jeff Keith on vocals, Brian Wheat on bass, Frank Hannon on guitar and Troy Luccketta on drums. Guitarist Tommy Skeoch was part of the original lineup in the eighties.

After getting airplay with "Modern Day Cowboy" then cover songs "Little Suzi" and "Signs," the band became an established national rock act, which helped made "Love Song" a big pop/rock ballad in 1990. The band went on to sell about 15 million albums and is considered Sacramento's most successful band.
