Deftones

Official website: Deftones.com

One of Sacramento's most successful rock acts has been Deftones, which formed in 1988. Led by Chino Moreno on vocals, the alternative band has sold millions after gaining recording deals with Warner labels Maverick and Reprise. Other members have included Stephen Carpenter on guitar, Abe Cunningham on drums with Chi Cheng as the original bassist. Cheng died in 2013 after suffering serious wounds from a van accident five years earlier. Frank Delgado has played with the band on keyboards and as a turntablist.

The band received early airplay prior to getting signed on KWOD's local show Sound of Sacramento. After getting signed by Madonna's label Maverick in 1993, Deftones started getting regular airplay on alternative stations like KWOD. Their debut album Adrenaline in 1995 included the singles "7 Words" and "Bored." Chino, who was born in Sacramento in 1973 and went to C.K. McClatchy High in the eighties, worked at Tower Records in shipping prior to forming Deftones. He is also involved in side projects such as Team Sleep, Crosses and Palms.
