The Cramps were a punk/rock band from Sacramento formed in 1976, which was three years after the nucleus
of the band left Sacramento. The band was fronted by the husband-and-wife team of Lux Interior (Erick Lee Purkhiser)
and Poison Ivy (Kristy Marlana Wallace). The couple had met four years earlier.
To be clear, The Cramps were not from Sacramento, but their two vocalists lived in the city for awhile, although neither were born here. They moved to Akron,
Ohio in 1973 then to New York a few years later, in which they played at CBGB's. Other band members included Bryan
Gregory and his sister Pam Balam. They were signed by Miles Copeland III to his label I.R.S. Records in 1977. On their
first UK tour they opened for The Police.
The band relocated to Los Angeles in 1980. They made their greatest showing on the national alternative
charts with the top 10 hit "Bikini Girls with Machine Guns" in 1990. They played KWOD 106.5's alternative Christmas
festival at Sacramento State University in December 1994. The station gave airplay to the band's 1991 song "Eyeball
In My Martini." That was the year they appeared on national TV for the first time, which was
on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
