Caron Vikre gives insight on record sales in this fourth segment
of our interview series conducted on October 27. During her time at Tower Records she says that in store
record play actually did help sales, at least a little bit. She says that store clerks wanted to play
less familiar music to create a hip impression. She says that each clerk played music they wanted to play
and it would get customers to ask about the music. She says that it would even help local artists sometimes.
She thinks that word or mouth is an important factor to selling music. Records that appeared high on the
charts could also be a factor to some degree. She explains that labels used chart performance for bragging
rights. As the CD Buyer her job was to buy product from the labels and resell it to the public, which is
why it was also her position to report record sales to music trade publication Billboard.
