Solar Inventor Al Rich "Video of the Day" review by Alex Cosper on October 10, 2013

I visited my former boss Al Rich on October 9 to find out how his solar business at ACR Solar International is developing. When I worked on the company's website in 2008 they focused on solar water heater systems designed by Al, in which he owns a patent. Three patents later he now sells systems that integrate solar heaters with solar electric panels. Photovoltaic (PV) systems convert sunlight into electricity while solar thermal systems use the sun's energy to heat water. The combination saves home owners a huge amount of money on energy. Al calls his panels "collectors," which collect heat for his Skyline solar water heaters.

In this SacTV video interview with Al Rich, he talks about his light weight solar collectors, which have an artistic aesthetic look that makes his solar systems stand out. He has figured out ways to make his system more efficient by replacing copper tubing with rubber. The rubber tubing works better for heat transfer and is cheaper than copper. His newest collector is called the "Megamatt," which is his fourth patent. He's working on another project called "Suntainer," which will be a revolutionary way to heating water that can be shipped around the world.

Our video interview was recorded at the company's headquarters and manufacturing facility located in Carmichael on Gibbons Drive near Fair Oaks Boulevard. The big shop houses several machines designed to make solar collectors one at a time as the orders come in. ACR Solar International was originally based in Virginia and has been operating out of Carmichael since the early 1990s. The Skyline water heating system was the first solar thermal system to ever be certified by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC) in the 1980s.
