Mark Dobbins on Guitar Restoration
SacTV.com "Video of the Day" review by Alex Cosper on March 3, 2013

This interview is the fourth in a series with custom guitar designer Mark Dobbins. This segment is about the repair and restoration work he does on guitars, along with tips on how to take proper care of guitars. He talks about how guitars are very sensitive to heat and can be damaged if they get exposed to too much heat and dry out, which can crack a guitar, making it sound unplayable. He says the most common problem that he has to deal with is neglect by the owner. He does a lot of headstock repair due to people dropping their guitars. Another common issue is repairing frets since they can wear out from excessive use. An important point he makes is that since guitars are made out of wood they can expand and contract due to temperatures. Mark reiterates that handcrafted guitars tend to be better quality and more durable than mass produced guitars. Carbon graphites used in guitar necks can help prevent warping, which is one of the worst things that can happen to musical instruments.
