Live Theatre in the Sacramento Region

In our second of three interviews, Woodland Opera House Executive Director
Jeff Kean discusses the live theatre industry in the Sacramento region. He talks about where he thinks the
industry is going as a result of new technology, forecasting a bright future for live theatre because it connects
with social scenes. He believes the Sacramento live theatre scene is healthy because it's attracting new
start-ups. He compares the wider regional scene in general with Woodland, which relies more specifically
on the Opera House while Sacramento has many choices. Kean says there have been several local playwrights
who have emerged from this area and he has provided opportunities for them. His outlook on regional theatre
is positive partly because of its active marketing. He points out that free social marketing
has been more effective at attracting patrons than cable TV advertising.
