Making County Exhibits More Exciting
SacTV.com "Video of the Day" review by
Alex Cosper on July 19, 2012
This year's state fair marks the lowest turnout of county exhibits since the 80s. Only half of California's 58 counties
bothered to show up at Cal Expo this year, according to this Sacramento Bee article Associate editor Foon Rhee.
With the rececession being the likely culprit, counties backed away from the expense of designing exhibits and travel just to try
to win up to $10,000 for best exhibit. Solano County, though, spent $40,000 on their exhibit and walked away as champs again this
year, according to the article. Solano has now won 7 of the past 10 years while Placer claimed the prize the past two years.
I raise the question in this video: why can't the emphasis be on creativity and knowledge instead of expense? The original purpose
of the state fair was to showcase the best each county had to offer for consumers, tourists and future residents. My idea for
helping improve county exhibits is for counties to submit video productions of their counties to be played all in one place
on a big screen.
