City Council Approves Arena Finance Proposal
SacTV.com "Video of the Day" review by Alex Cosper on March 7, 2012

This video called "The Historic Arena Vote" introduces new elements to SacTV.com's news reporting and commentary as Sacramento added a big story to its history on March 6. The Sacramento City Council voted 7-2 to approve financing of the $391 million new sports arena plan, as reported by Sacramento Press. Mayor Kevin Johnson called the vote "historic" as it moves forward one of his main objectives, which is to revitalize the unused railyards area Downtown for contractor AEG to building a new entertainment complex for the Sacramento Kings and other big events.

The new sports arena issue has been ongoing for years and met with community resistance until Mayor Kevin Johnson came to office, pushing the issue more aggressively than any previous mayor. Johnson's affirmative vote was joined by Council Members Angelique Ashby, Steve Cohn, Rob Fong, Jay Schenirer, Darrell Fong and Bonnie Pannell. The only two opposing votes came from Council Members Sandy Sheedy and Kevin McCarty. In this video, I talk about the how the new arena should be considered for local events.
