Railyards History and Revitalization

The Sacramento Railyards at one time was the site of the valley's top employer for
eight decades. It was a western hub of the Transcontinental Railroad. It is now the
talk of a Downtown revitalization plan for a new sports complex and
museum that showcases the science and engineering of rail technology. It's also the
site for a high-speed rail plan. The area sits next to the fork of the Sacramento
and American Rivers and could ultimately become a vital part of a new waterfront development,
creating a tourist attraction. This brief documentary summarizes the history and importance
of the site that could also become a district of new stores and homes.
Mayor Kevin Johnson calls the Railyards a smart growth project that could double the
size of Downtown. The effort has been helped by non-profit organization Center For Creative
Land Recycling (CCLR), which has been a redevelopment advocate both on a local and federal level,
helping the City secure funding for the project. The project is seen by local leaders as a way
to boost the region's economy as a solution to the lenghty recession.
